If you visit Australia's residential mathematics research institute, you might be surprised by what you see.
It's called MATRIX and it's located in regional Victoria in the town of Creswick. It's a place for mathematicians to gather and work together.
ACEMS Chief Investigator Jan de Gier founded MATRIX and is its Director. Unlike a conference, though, where everything is scheduled, Jan says the key to success at MATRIX is providing an environment that's very much the opposite and the days are less structured.

MATRIX started as an initiative in 2015 born out of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers (ACEMS). It was soon after launched in 2016, and is now a partnership between The University of Melbourne, Monash University and the Australian National University (ANU).
