Charl completed his PhD in Mathematics at the University of Johannesburg in 2008. Charl’s PhD was in the field of pure graph theory, where he studied distance-two colourings of graphs. This problem is motivated by the Channel Assignment problem in telecommunications. From 2008 to 2013, Charl was a research fellow in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Melbourne. In December 2013 he was appointed to the position of Lecturer in Optimisation in the School of Mathematics and Statistics also at the University of Melbourne.
